Byul-tiful Photo Contest, Final Week

The final week’s theme is “Oh no!” or “Oh my!” or something like that. ¬†Due to Byul’s permanently shocked expression. ūüėõ

Obviously, my first thought was to make poor Tiger Lily witness some pseudo-yaoi embrace between Pan and Hook–since they’re actually just Pullip and Taeyang dressed up as said characters–but even if I could bring myself to do that, it wouldn’t look very good because default Pullip bodies aren’t very actually flexible. ¬†(I mentioned the difficulty on the forum, and it was pointed out that it’s not so hard to make them look intimate, and examples were provided…every single one of the examples showing a modified Pullip on another type of body. ¬†Yeah. ¬†That’s helpful.)

Eventually, I decided to settle for her love of nature, because, well, I wanted to submit something. ¬†Unfortunately, by the time I did, the sun decided that it was time for three or four days of cloudy skies. ūüė¶ ¬†So the lighting’s not very good on the photos I ended up taking. ¬†But since the idea was none too great, either, perhaps that’s irrelevant.

I thought I had four working versions of the shot, but it turned out I only have the two, because in the other two her stand is still showing. ūüė¶

Version "1"
Version “1”
Version "2"
Version “2”

Bah, the lighting’s pretty bad on “2” there, isn’t it? ¬†I mean, worse than on the other one. ¬†She’s pretty washed out. ¬†I guess I’ll have to go with version “1” by default. ¬†Ugh. ¬†I wanted to have options. ¬†I took about fifteen or twenty of these, and most of them are utter garbage. ¬†(Lol, that’s ironic, considering the subject matter is litter!) ¬†It didn’t help, of course, that the hedge row in the background was actually pretty thin and I had to trim the photos because you could see my neighbor’s house. ¬†That kind of ruined the illusion, too.

Anyway, since I was finally done with the contest, I had one last photo to take with Tiger Lily:

Tiger Lily's Revenge
Tiger Lily’s Revenge

That’s what Pan gets for having all those Tinks around! ¬†Now Tiger Lily’s got a mini-Pan of her own! ūüėõ ¬†(Too bad it’s not a Liddle Kiddle one, though. ¬†That would be be awesome.)

(I would provide a link to all the photos in their full size, but it would seem that Dropbox has decided that it doesn’t want to work anymore. ¬†Seriously. ¬†I tried to put the pictures into the gallery and it told me my log in wasn’t being allowed because it seemed to be automated. ¬†Eventually I managed to convince it it that I was, in fact, a human being pushing buttons and not a robot pushing buttons, only now it won’t give me anything but an error screen and won’t let me at any of my files. ¬†So, yeah…no bigger versions of these pics right now.)

(Dropbox is back up, so the link to the full Byul-tiful photo gallery is here.)

Anyway, in other Byul-related news, Kaiko has her jacket now, and I almost ordered her dress from Etsy last night, but kind of panicked at the last second when I saw how much I was going to be spending on other stuff, too. ¬†(There were also dresses for Pyrrha, Moxie Girlz Teenz, the eye chip mold for Pyrrha, and stuff like that. ¬†It was going to be like $86…and I freaked out and decided to wait until I could buy those lottery tickets first. ¬†Just in case.)

Byul-tiful Photo Contest, week 3

This week’s theme is “Best Friend,” which seemed a bit awkward, since my Byul is Tiger Lily, and I’ve been sticking to her movie personality, which was less than fleshed out. ¬†But in thinking about her scenes in the movie, I started thinking further about “why the heck is she the only sane member of her tribe?” ¬†And aside from thinking that there’s definitely the fodder for a novel there, it gave me the idea for the photo.

Version 1
Version 1
Version 2
Version 2
Version 3
Version 3

The idea here is that since everyone in Tiger Lily’s tribe is a useless moron other than herself, and Peter Pan is usually off with the Lost Boys–who are also useless morons–Tiger Lily’s true best friend is not actually Pan (who’s more her crush than her friend anyway) but the spirit of the woods. ¬†(Here represented by a Zelf.) ¬†Taking these photos was rough; the light was so bright I could barely see what was on the camera’s screen, and I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes. ūüė¶ ¬†Anyway, I’m thinking of using version 2, even though it shoes a bloop of runaway hair. ¬†(Because of the complex background, I couldn’t remove it. ¬†My PhotoShop abilities are not strong enough to delete hair against a background of grass. ¬†Wall, yes. ¬†Grass, no.)

Anyway, speaking of Zelfs, there’s a picture I’ve been meaning to take/share all summer. ¬†And here it is:

Ceiling fans: the natural enemy of Zelfs.
Ceiling fans: the natural enemy of Zelfs.

There’s another version of the ceiling fan photo (focused on the other Zelf) in the Byul-tiful gallery, if you want to sort through all that. ¬†(Well, okay, it’s actually not all that big. ¬†21 pictures as of this posting.)

Speaking of a different Byul, Humpty Dumpty has a new outftit:

In Bratz-wear.
In Bratz-wear.

I’ve been wanting to get those pants on some doll for a long time, so I’m glad they’ve found a wearer, but she can’t stand up in them. ūüė¶ ¬†(Either they’re poorly made, or Bratz dolls are exceptionally short in the crotch region. ¬†Given how nicely that other pair of Bratz pants fit her, I think this particular pair of pants are just really poorly made. ¬†Whatever the case is, the pants form this hideous V going up towards her waist. ¬†It’s really ugly, but you can’t see it as long as she’s sitting down.)

She still needs a new name, though. ¬†I am not going to keep calling her Humpty Dumpty, but just calling her Byul seems anti-climactic. ¬†I need to look up the ancient Greek for “egg.” ¬†Or maybe for “blue.” ¬†Or if those don’t work, I could use some Latin, maybe. ¬†(Uh, not the Latin for “egg,” though. ¬†I’m not having a doll called “Ovum.” ¬†That’s worse than “Humpty Dumpty.”)

Byul-tiful, Week 2, and Dal Kanta

Week 2 of the Byul-tiful Photo Contest’s theme is “Crush,” so it was kind of a no-brainer that it had to focus on Peter Pan. ¬†I could have used the shot of Tiger Lily gazing at the storybook of Pan preparing to rescue her from Captain Hook, but that would have felt cheap, using a photo I’d already taken, so I took a new one of her watching him rescue her on the DVD. ¬†(Because the Blu-ray does stupid stuff if you pause it.)

Don't try this at home!
Don’t try this at home!

No one ever taught her not to sit quite so close to the television, apparently… ūüėõ ¬†I did edit out some of the loose hairs, as her braids are in pretty sorry shape at this point ūüė¶ ¬†but it said it was okay for us to do that. ¬†(And, strangely, that square-looking thing just behind her headband is not a clunky part of my editing. ¬†That was there to begin with. ¬†I think it’s actually the light switch…)

Anyway, the Dal I ordered from Amazon (for the ludicrously low price of $35, which was too cheap to pass up!) arrived a little bit early. ¬†(She wasn’t supposed to get here until Thursday, since I picked the “no rush” option, instead of the “free two day shipping” because they promised to give me a $5 credit. ¬†Yeah, I’m cheap like that. ¬†Unfortunately, it seems only to be good on groceries and home cleaning supplies…I shoulda read the small print…)

Kanta in her box
Kanta in her box

The box was a bit dented and dinged up, but for that little money, I was rather expecting that. ¬†What’s important is that there was no injury to the doll within.

"Forward, men, to battle!!"
“Forward, men, to battle!!”

I hadn’t realized, until I got her out of the package, that she was a warrior doll like Sapphire and Oscar. ¬†I wonder who she’s fighting? ¬†The British? ¬†No one in particular? ¬†(Probably the latter…) ¬†Dang, now I need an Utena more than ever. ¬†Maybe if I can win the lottery I can commission one from a talented artist. ¬†Well, commission a uniform from a talented artist. ¬†The face-up wouldn’t need to be all that complex, and the wig could probably just be bought, but the uniform? ¬†Yeah, that would be difficult.

Um, yikes.  Off-topic.  Moving on.

Curly, pointy shoes!
Curly, pointy shoes!

I love her shoes. ¬†They’re practically the first thing I noticed when I took her box out of the shipping crate. ¬†I’m not entirely certain they fit the overall theme of her outfit (I associate that type of shoes with the Middle East more than with India, which is what her outfit seems to be going for) but they’re wonderful shoes, regardless. ¬†(And I know very little about world dress and even less about world shoe fashion so maybe I’m totally wrong anyway.)

Elegance everywhere
Elegance everywhere

Her sash also doubles as a sheathe for her sword, though I’m not positive if it’s supposed to…though that sword…man…it’s saying “Rome” to me; it looks like a gladius to me. ¬†Uh, yeah…not really relevant, I know. ¬†(And probably wrong, too. ¬†Weaponry is not really my forte.)

There are a lot of different hues in her outfit, iridescence like a peacock’s tail-feathers.

Case in point
Case in point

But, man, that sparkly on her turban…I wonder if Nicodemus is going to give it to Mrs. Brisby as soon as my back is turned…

(Or Mrs. Frisby, if you prefer.)

(1000 bonus points if you know what I’m talking about.)

Why did I take this picture on this crazy angle?
Why did I take this picture on this crazy angle?

I actually had some difficulty getting the turban on at first, but it fit snugly, so it’s probably not going to fall off again. ¬†(Unlike poor Tiger Lily’s headband; that thing falls off at the slightest provocation.)

Kanta's face
Kanta’s face

She’s got a very subtle face-up, I think. ¬†Her lips are a pretty shade of pink, very naturalistic, and her eye make-up is underplayed. ¬†Her eyechips aren’t actually quite that orange when you’re just looking at her; I was losing the natural light, and had to use the flash.

Tink is sulking...
Tink is sulking…

Now that she’s not my only (full-size) Dal, Tink is sulking…but will she be more or less sulky when two more arrive? ¬†(Yep, I went ahead and made that order. ¬†I shouldn’t have, but…I couldn’t stop myself. ¬†Besides, Paypal has this thing right now that if you spend $150 in August, you get a “mystery bonus” in September of between $10 and $100, so…at least I’ll get $10 of it back.)

Byul-tiful Photo Contest, week one, final part

Okay, this time I got it right. ¬†Though I still have to pick which shot I actually want to submit to the contest. ¬†ūüėõ

I stopped and thought about it, and said to myself “What is Tiger Lily’s greatest virtue, the feature that makes her inner beauty shine?” ¬†And I thought about the scene in the movie that introduced her, when she was willing to die to protect Peter Pan from Captain Hook, and realized “Oh, right, it’s her loyalty to her friend(s).” ¬†Er, or her crush, or whatever Pan is to her, exactly. ¬†(I’m not entirely clear on that one…)

Anyway! ¬†So I decided on an elaborate photo shoot in my back yard, which was slightly hampered by the fact that as soon as I picked up her bow this morning, the string decided to come untied from one end, so I had to use one of the clear rubber bands (left over from opening my second Wydowna (who I’m going to make into Spider Woman (the Navajo one, not the Marvel character) a while back) to take the place of the string, which kind of changed the shape of the bow a bit, but…eh, what was I gonna do? ¬†It was going to be painfully obvious there was no string otherwise! ¬†It just looks like she’s in the process of drawing it, y’know?

So, I took a lot of versions of the set-up, which is Tiger Lily fending off Captain Hook, who has stumbled on a sleeping Peter Pan…

Phew! ¬†Okay, so hopefully now that I’ve gotten them all up in a row like that, I can compare them neatly and handily and I’ll be able to tell which one I like best so I can decide which one to turn in to the contest.

I really needed to put Captain Hook closer to the others than that. ūüė¶ ¬†But it’s gotten too hot out there to go back outside for another photo shoot, so this is going to have to be it. ¬†(Also, every time I take Tiger Lily off her stand, her braids get more and more messed up. ¬†It’s heart-breaking! ¬†They were still perfect before I decided to do this contest…)

Anyway, I took a few individual shots while I was at it:

Heroine shot
Heroine shot

I fixed the position of the arrow for this one; it was kind of in a bad place for the main pictures, unfortunately. ūüė¶

Sleeping Pan

Why is the icon of childhood also a lazy and irresponsible bum?

The menacing Captain Hook
The menacing Captain Hook

The biggest problem with the actual movie of Peter Pan is that Captain Hook is far and away the most interesting character in it, so you actually kind of resent spending time with the hero.

I now owe my Dal Tinkerbell a photo shoot, because she was left out of this one, since the Angel Pullip was playing the part of Tinkerbell.

Also, I have been a bad girl lately. ¬†I made two doll orders¬†(of two dolls each) on-line in the last two days. ¬†(Naughty, naughty me!) ¬†Worse still, three of the four dolls were Pullips, even though I told myself “no more Pullips!” ¬†Well, okay, technically, they were two Little Pullips and a Dal, but…yeah, I’ve been bad. ¬†But the Little Pullips were on a “sample sale” and the Dal was hyper-cheap and they only had two left,¬†(and the fourth doll was Monster High, so cheap to begin with) and…ugh, I have no will-power, apparently.

Oh, the link to the gallery for the whole week’s photos is here.

Byul-tiful Photo Contest, week one, part two

Okay, so I don’t feel like the photos from last time are going to cut the mustard. ¬†So far, only one person has posted their entry for the first week, right? ¬†As a reminder, the theme was simply “Beautiful,” which we can interpret in any way we want. ¬†Well, the person who’s already posted went for inner beauty rather than outer beauty, which kind of ups the ante for everyone else, y’know? ¬†‘Cause now it’s like we’ve gotta do both.

Or that’s how it feels from here.

So “blowing kisses from the roses” isn’t gonna cut it.

Therefore, I tried to do some more photography with Tiger Lily today. ¬†Of course, my place is a sty, and I have no garden, so I had to take her elsewhere. ¬†I tried taking her to my brother’s place, hoping there was someone at his condo association with a garden I could use, but at the last minute I chickened out, unwilling to plop my doll down in a total stranger’s personal flower bed without permission and figuring that knocking on a stranger’s door to ask permission wouldn’t do any good in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, as they’d be out at work, so I had to try taking pictures inside his condo, which is at least cleaner than my house.

Tiger Lily and the story book
Tiger Lily and the story book

I love this picture, but it totally doesn’t fit the theme. ¬†Maybe there’ll be a theme later in the month this will fit.

Then I had the idea of having the movie play on the TV and have Peter Pan reflecting in Tiger Lily’s eyes. ¬†To test if that would work, I held the doll up next to the TV while it was showing whatever the heck was showing (weather channel, I think) and took a couple of photos, just as an experiment:

With flash
With flash
Without flash
Without flash

So it actually kind of works without the flash on. ¬†But that doesn’t really fit the theme, though, so I didn’t bother trying it. ¬†(Also, it turned out that because I put the Blu-ray into the player instead of the DVD, it did annoying things if you tried to pause it instead of just, you know, pausing. ¬†Because heaven forfend that the movie should just sit there and wait for you.)

Finally, I went with my last resort, the “I forgive you” shot of her patting the Angel Pullip not-really-Tinkerbell on the head. ¬†Which is from an awkward angle because there weren’t a lot of places to set them up so as to have a clean background. ¬†There are three versions that kinda-sorta work.

Version 1
Version 1
Version 2
Version 2
Version 3
Version 3

Unfortunately, version 3 is kind of the best one, except that you can see I left her moccasins at home, in that I didn’t want to lose them on the way over. ¬†(Dang things don’t really fit, y’know? ¬†And they’re more like clogs than moccasins, but that’s neither here nor there.) ¬†Also in that shot it looks more like they’re watching He-man than Peter Pan, but…they really are watching Peter Pan. ¬†That’s the cave where Hook has Tiger Lily tied up, honest!

The photos are all still kind of awful, aren’t they?

I don’t know. ¬†Anyone have any thoughts? ¬†Do I need to start over, yet again?

Anyway, in other news, Pyrrha now has a kimono:

Kimono, kimono!
Kimono, kimono!

It’s a bit big for her, because it’s actually a Barbie kimono, but the color scheme is just perfect. ¬†I’ve had that Barbie sitting around for quite a while now, and today I finally got around to opening her and seeing if the kimono would fit Pyrrha, though I felt a little awkward about opening a twenty year old collector’s Barbie. ¬†(I know; someone, somewhere, just burned me in effigy, I’m sure. ¬†But the box had been beaten to crap! ¬†And it was just a Dolls of the World Barbie. ¬†And I still have one in a decent box. ¬†And I’d gotten her for $5. ¬†At the time, I’d planned on putting the kimono on an Abbey Bominable to make her into a proper Yuki Onna, but this is a better use for the kimono. ¬†Though if I ever do manage to get my hands on a clear Obitsu, I may put it on that instead of on Pyrrha, ’cause that’d be freakin’ sweet, too.) ¬†I love the way the kimono looks on her, and she’s going to keep wearing it for a while, but it really does make her look like she has an entirely different personality, doesn’t it?

Eventually, like once I feel like I’m no longer cursed, I really need to give Pyrrha a haircut. ¬†Her hair’s too long right now, and she really needs bangs to hide the fact that her scalp’s not quite the same color as her face.

I also splurged(?) while I was buying myself some school supplies at Target, and bought Pyrrha a car:

Vroom, vroom!
Vroom, vroom!

It must be very eco-friendly, since it’s made of cloth. ūüėõ ¬†It was on hyper-clearance, so I figured it was okay for me to buy it, even though I’m not supposed to be buying anything other than daily necessities right now.

Byul-tiful Photo Contest first week

Despite having zero chance of winning anything, I decided to enter the Byul photo contest from the Dal House forum. ¬†Because, um, it seemed like fun, I guess? ¬†I’m a terrible photographer and I only have one Byul whose stock I don’t want to remove, so it wasn’t a very good idea in any sense of the word, but…anyway! ¬†The theme for the first week is “Beautiful.”

I went out this morning to a nearby park with Tiger Lily to take some pictures, but August isn’t really a good time for it. ¬†Most of the flowers are no longer in bloom and the leaves have yet to turn. ¬†Still, I found a few roses, and balanced her on the edge of a park bench to take a shot with them in the background. ¬†The idea I was going for was “blowing kisses among the roses” though I’m not sure if that comes across. ¬†I took two versions before she fell off the bench for the second time, at which point I decided to give up before she got damaged.

Byul - Beautiful ver 1
Version 1
Version 2
Version 2

Obviously, they’d both be better without that car in the background. ūüė¶ ¬†But removing it would definitely be more editing than is allowed. ¬†I’m leaning towards the second version, myself, even though the roses are a bit less prominent, since the doll looks better, and the sky is brighter and more colorful. ¬†On the other hand, the first one looks a bit more like she’s blowing a kiss. ¬†So…yeah, I don’t know. ¬†I have zero artistic understanding and visual aptitude.

Anyway, anyone have any thoughts? ¬†The photos aren’t due until Sunday, so theoretically I could try again if everyone is of the opinion that these are hideous and ghastly photos…but I’m a little leery of the idea, given that I definitely seem to be cursed lately.

Obviously, I’d get better pictures if I took her to the Botanical Gardens, but…well, I know they wouldn’t want me setting her down among their flowers (they would, in fact, pitch a fit), so I’d have to have someone with me to hold her while I took the picture. ¬†Hmm. ¬†Actually, I could probably rope my brother into doing that. ¬†(Maybe. ¬†He might not be willing to go that far…) ¬†Sigh. ¬†Maybe I should do that. ¬†‘Cause, actually, these really are kind of awful…

This would be much easier if I was a gardener. ūüėõ
